Duncan Sherwood-Forbes
Overview
Duncan's obsession with art began in his early childhood in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Regularly attending figure drawing classes at the nearby DeCordova museum, Duncan built his artistic skills throughout early adolescence and teenage years. He first began creating wire sculpture in 2005, at the age of 16, after being given a copy of Calder’s Circus by an instructor at the Putney School for the Arts in Vermont. Duncan fell in love with the ability of wire to draw in the air, and his career as a wire sculptor was born.He went on to major in sculpture at Washington University in St. Louis in 2009, and after leaving the program he moved to Somerville, MA. He began work as a visitor’s assistant at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, where he created and led gallery talks for visitors while continuing to refine and sell his wire work. In 2014 he moved to Los Angeles and began working in healthcare while continuing to maintain his art practice. Amid growing popularity of his wire work and several large scale commissions, Duncan began working as an artist full time in 2019. Today he spends his time furthering his practice through the introduction of other media such as paper and ceramics, creating work for galleries and art fairs, and traveling the California coast teaching specialty workshops in wire and ceramics.
